Bedern Hall, York city centre, United Kingdom (7/4/2025 – 11/04/2025 )
From April 7th to 11th, the PARASOL MSCA network gathered in York, United Kingdom, for the third Network-Wide Event (NWE-3), organised by the University of York (UoY).
This event was a valuable opportunity for our Doctoral Researchers (DRs) to share their research progress and engage in meaningful discussions with peers, supervisors, and industry partners, including Wit Tyranowicz from Radiotechnika, Emma Kowalczuk from JLR, and Ayhan Gunsaya from Ford.
The event began with a warm welcome from Dr. Simon Bale, followed by a project update from Dr. Anne Roc’h and Dr. Jeanne ter Bogt-van der Waal.
Each DR presented their research developments, leading to insightful conversations and constructive feedback from professors, supervisors, and associated partners.
The program featured a variety of lectures, training sessions, and workshops, including:
- “Communicating with the Voyager Spacecraft” – Prof. Andy Marvin
- “ClearSky Medical Diagnostics” – Prof. Steve Smith
- “Photonic Grating Reflectometer: From Basic Research to Commercialisation” – Prof. Steve Johnson
- “From Academia to Entrepreneurship: York Probe Sources” – Prof. Mohamed El-Gomati
- “IP Considerations for PhD Students and Their Host Universities” – James Kitson, Head of Commercialisation at UoY
- “Empathy in Technical Settings: A Design Approach to Business Development” – Dr. Steve Hall
The program also included visits to the York NeuroImaging Centre and the EuroFins Electromagnetic Compatibility Laboratory in Castleford.
Special thanks to Dr. Simon Bale, Dr. Jeanne ter Bogt-van der Waal, and Ali Ghaffarlouy Raef for their fantastic work in organising this successful event.
During this week’s DN Parasol event, the team also had the chance to enjoy some fantastic social activities!
We kicked things off with a visit to some of York’s most iconic historical landmarks, including the impressive city walls and the majestic York Minster — a great opportunity to explore the rich heritage of the city.
Later, things got competitive during an axe-throwing session, at The Hilt in York! It was a thrilling and fun experience for everyone, with DR2 Sadegh Barzegar narrowly taking the win in a close final against Wit Tyranowicz from Radiotechnika. Well done to both!
